Southbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway at Spencer Road have reopened after a gravel spill led to a traffic detour Monday morning, according to West Shore RCMP.

A DriveBC Highway 1 camera at 8:43 a.m. captured the moments a dump truck’s trailer tipped over, spilling gravel onto the highway in Langford.

A subsequent DriveBC image at 8:54 a.m. showed the crash’s aftermath with traffic snarled and police, an ambulance and fire crews on scene.

The driver of the dump truck sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital to be assessed, said West Shore RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Nancy Saggar.

“No other vehicles were involved in this incident,” added Saggar.

In a tweet, RCMP said officers responded to the crash. It thanked commuters for their patience amid the closure, except for one motorist “who blew past our barricade and received a ticket.”

According to DriveBC, a detour was in effect via Leigh Road. It said the highway was closed between Leigh and Millstream roads but reopened around 12:45 p.m.
