WATCH: Canadians are asked to give on the sixth-annual Giving Tuesday.

Whether you were bombarded with Black Friday deals or Cyber Monday mania, there’s no excuse not to have picked up some stellar steals over the last few days. But if all this buying is just too much consumerism for you, today is Giving Tuesday, a global movement now in 150 countries to encourage giving and volunteering after Black Friday.

“Giving Tuesday is a global movement for giving and volunteering, taking place each year after Black Friday. The “Opening day of the giving season,” it’s a time when charities, companies and individuals join together and rally for favourite causes. In the same way that retailers take part in Black Friday, the giving community comes together for GivingTuesday,” reads a statement on givingtuesday.ca.

Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North takes part in Giving Tuesday.

“I have a 23-year background in corporate retail so I was a part of that Black Friday mess for so long,” said Pat McKenna, executive director for Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North. “You know, Giving Tuesday really is about not thinking about buying stuff but giving stuff and giving back to your community through charity.”

Habitat for Humanity has now launched its Christmas fundraising campaign on Giving Tuesday.

“It grows every year and with the community involvement and people getting involved and people understanding what Giving Tuesday is is so important right? It’s a grassroots thing that started and now every year we get incrementally a little bit more money donated online and through our campaign,” added McKenna.

Until December 31, 2018, Christoph Real Estate Group and Robbins & Company, CPAs will match every donation up to a total of $5,000.
