Gas prices jump across Greater Victoria

Gas prices have gone up nine cents a litre in Victoria.

If you are planning on buying fuel in Victoria today, you might want to go as soon as possible.

Greater Victoria is seeing a spike in price at the pumps, with some stations already raising their prices nine cents to 149.9 cents a litre.

The increase comes as prices also climb in Vancouver. Despite the lower demand at this time of year, the rise in gas prices is being blamed on temporary refinery shutdowns in Burnaby and Washington state, the low Canadian dollar and the recent announcement that the Olympic pipeline that distributes gasoline throughout Washington and Oregon will be taken off-line for four or five days of maintenance.

And this is not expected to be the end of high gasoline prices. Prices could get worse in April when the carbon tax rate will increase $5 a tonne to $35 a tonne, adding an additional 1.22 cents. There will also be a two per cent gas tax increase, from 3.5 cents to 5.5. cents, in the Capital Region to pay for improvements to local bus services.
