The death of a Nanaimo homeless man whose body was found on Boxing Day was not the result of foul play, investigators say.

According to a press release issued by the Nanaimo RCMP on Tuesday, a forensic autopsy has ruled out foul play as the cause of a 59-year-old homeless man’s death.

The man was found dead in an alley on Fitzwilliam Street in Nanaimo’s Old City Quarter on Dec. 26.

Friends identified the victim as Leonard Williams, a homeless man who was known throughout downtown as “Little Leonard” because he was barely five feet tall.

Police had previously called the death suspicious because witnesses reportedly heard loud noises coming from the area where the body was discovered.

On Tuesday, however, Nanaimo RCMP said their serious crimes unit has completed their investigation and determined that the loud noises reportedly heard by witnesses were not connected to the man’s death.
