WatchA new home popping up in Greater Victoria is inflating peoples interest. The house is expanding the conversation around housing for neighbours. Now the site is blowing up around the city.

A home has literally been blown up in Esquimalt this week.

An inflatable home, a first for the country, has caught the attention of many people not only in Esquimalt but across Greater Victoria.

The balloon-looking structure is called a Binishell. Nouvel housing has partnered up with Binishell and licensed out the technology.

The home is the first of its kind in the country and although this house will take around six months to build, in the future, the construct will happen in about two months.

The idea was brought to the Esquimalt city council last year and everyone was immediately on board.

“There’s always a little bit of trepidation when something brand new comes in but this has been able to be carried right through and we’re seeing it in action,” Esquimalt Mayor Barbara Desjardins.

Rob, one of the owners of this balloon home, said he went around to neighbours to share their plans and received nothing but good feedback.

Nouvel Housing  said it is thrilled to be bringing something new to Canada that offers an affordable and environmentally conscious way of living.

“Our whole mission is to put people in attainable housing,” Britanny Olney, Nouvel Housing.
