A suspicious house fire in Campbell River is being deemed arson

RCMP have deemed a suspicious fire that destroyed a house on the Wei Wai Kum First Nation in Campbell River as arson.

An investigation into the fire, which took place on Tuesday, June 25, is currently ongoing. On Wednesday, Campbell River RCMP confirmed the fire was not random and is being treated as arson.

According to RCMP, a woman, who was a member of the community, was arrested in relation to the offence but has subsequently been released as the investigation continues.

On Tuesday, fire crews were called to a structure fire in the 2300-block of Henderson Road at around 9:20 a.m.

The fire destroyed the single-family home where it started and resulted in some damage to one of the neighbouring homes.

Campbell River Fire Chief Thomas Doherty said Tuesday that there were a number of propane cylinders at the house that led to venting and a few explosions. No one was home at the time of the fire.
