One person is missing and others were evacuated after an apartment fire in Esquimalt on the 800-block of Craigflower Road Sunday afternoon.

The Esquimalt Fire Department was called to the large blaze just before 4 p.m. and quickly called other units from CFB Esquimalt, Victoria and View Royal to assist.

Witnesses say one woman was stuck on a balcony and members of the public were trying to get her to jump from the fourth floor, and were holding a blanket.

Officials cannot confirm but believe someone, possibly the woman, has died.

“Very quickly crews tried to make a quick rescue… unfortunately [it looks like] we had one unsuccessful rescue,” said Esquimalt Fire Chief Chris Jancowski.

“Anytime civilians try to help civilians in grey situations like this it is to be applauded, their actions trying to coax and help her and assist her in her time of need is greatly appreciated.”

Crews will be investigating the fire tonight and will likely not be able to confirm the death until Monday. They believe all other occupants were evacuated.

Multiple ladder rescued were conducted.
