Fire breaks out in dry brush near encampment along Dallas Road

Crews battled a fire that broke out near an encampment in Holland Point Park Monday night.

Firefighters were called to a 10- by 20-foot-section of dry brush that had caught on fire at around 8 p.m. in the park, just south of Turner Street along Dallas Road.

Two fire engines and 11 firefighters responded to extinguish the blaze.

Firefighters thanked the public for quickly notifying them of the blaze, saying things could’ve been worse as fire can spread easily in the region’s current dry conditions.

“As you’re aware it’s still very dry out so I want to take this time to remind the public of the tenderness in the brush and grass,” said Deputy Victoria Fire Chief Chris Royle. “Just a reminder there’s no open burning in the City of Victoria and that includes our cities and our parks.”

City and bylaw officers were spotted cleaning up debris including a scooter and bike wheel at the site Tuesday morning.

The city said at least two people had been sheltering in a tent found near the scene. No one was injured in the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
