One person died following a single-vehicle crash south of Port Hardy.

RCMP say a vehicle was travelling southbound on Highway 19 when it crashed into a ditch just north of the Port Alice junction, near Rupert Main, shortly before 11 a.m. on Saturday.

A female passenger was declared dead at the scene, police say.

The male driver of the vehicle was airlifted to a hospital in Victoria with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash occurred approximately 20 kilometres south of Port Hardy and resulted in Highway 19 being closed in both directions for more than three hours on Saturday.

According to the RCMP, shortly before the crash, the vehicle drove onto the right shoulder in the southbound lane, then veered into the northbound lane and crashed into a ditch.

“Alcohol doesn’t appear to be a factor in the crash and the matter is still under investigation,” Const. Rebekah Draht of the Port Alice RCMP, said in a press release.
