A family was forced to flee after being confronted by a man with a knife at Beacon Hill Park on Saturday, say police.

The Victoria Police Department says officers responded to the washroom area near the playground in Beacon Hill Park at around 2 p.m. Saturday after a family called 911 and reported that a man had been brandishing a knife towards them.

VicPD says the suspect had allegedly pulled out a knife and confronted a man with his family, which included a small child in a stroller, forcing them to run away and call 911.

Multiple officers descended on the popular park and located the suspect, who was arrested without incident, searched transported to holding cells, where he was held in custody.

During the search, VicPD says officers located evidence of drug trafficking and a separate investigation into possession for the purpose of trafficking is now ongoing.

The man, who has not been identified, faces recommended charges of assault with a weapon, possession of a prohibited weapon, and breaching a release order.
