Emergency crew responding after reports of a parachute accident Saturday.

Emergency crews were relieved after finding out a report of a skydiver’s parachute not opening just outside of Port Alberni Saturday evening was false.

The Cherry Creek Fire Department, Port Alberni Rescue Squad and a helicopter from B.C. Ambulance all responded around 6 p.m. following reports of the accident.

After hours of searching McLean Mill Historic Park north of the city they were able to determine that two paragliders were flying in the area and landed safely.

The two were heading back to Salt Spring Island when emergency crews were able to contact them and make sure they were safe.

Rescue squad search manager Brad Falkenberg says it’s always better to send resources quickly, instead of putting lives at risk.

“We’ve got to check it out,” said Falkenberg.

“It’s always the best outcome when everyone’s okay.”
