Expert calls for water safety as hot weather draws Islanders to the beach

After a cooler than usual spring, many British Columbians are welcoming the province’s first hot stretch of the summer by going to the beach.

However, there is a call to action for Islanders to take necessary precautions before stepping into the water.

Lifesaving Society – BC/Yukon is a not-for-profit organization advocating for water safety education and Executive Director Dale Miller says people should be prepared to respond to the worst case scenario.

“Plan ahead and think, ‘what am I going to do here if somebody gets in trouble in the water? Have I got a rope bag I can throw to them and pull them in so I don’t have to go in the water?’ Just those kinds of things to prepare for the worst-case scenario,” said Miller.

The hot weather seems to be gaining some momentum as today was the second straight day with temperatures reaching over 25 degrees. Environment Canada says that using sunscreen, wearing a hat, and UV-protective eyewear will help protect against heat-related illnesses.

Environment Canada is forecasting most of the Island will get up to the high 20s tomorrow which is around five to 10 degrees above seasonal norms.
