The Victoria Fire Department responded to an evening fire on Monday, located at the former Travelodge Hotel on Gorge Rd.

The facility is currently being leased as a temporary multi-unit supportive housing residence.

According to Victoria Fire, crews responded to the structure fire with 15 firefighters at approximately 5:15 p.m. on December 14.

When authorities and trucks arrived on the scene, firefighters found smoke filling the second floor.

The blaze, which was located in a second-floor suite, was attacked from the inside of the building, according to a release from Victoria Fire.

Crews say there was heavy black smoke lingering in the suite when firefighters first entered.

Victoria Fire says that it was able to confine the fire quickly upon entering the suite, containing the blaze to the one location.

The facility sustained fire damage to the initial suite as well as two adjacent suites.

Water and smoke damage was also sustained in the hallway.

Victoria Fire is estimating that the cost of damage from the Monday night blaze totals around $100,000.

At this time, one person was displaced from their place, however, was able to be moved to another suite in the building.

An investigation is currently ongoing as officials try to determine the causation of the blaze, but preliminary findings point to it starting as a result of “improperly disposed of smoking materials.”
