Environment Canada has issued wind warnings for northern, eastern and western Vancouver Island, citing an approaching frontal system that is expected to generate wind speeds between 60 km/h and 90 km/h depending on the region on Sunday afternoon.

The weather agency says exposed coastal sections of eastern Vancouver Island will experience winds reaching speeds of 70 km/h this afternoon and evening, easing by Monday morning.

The wind warning for eastern Vancouver Island applies to Courtenay to Campbell River and Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay.

For western Vancouver Island, southeasterly winds of 60 km/h to 90 km/h are expected in exposed coastal sections beginning this afternoon and into the evening and overnight hours, with winds expected to ease by Monday morning.

Meanwhile, northern Vancouver Island is expected to see southeasterly winds of up to 90 km/h will redevelop over exposed coastal sections starting Sunday afternoon.

Environment Canada says high winds can cause damage to buildings.

“Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur. Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break,” Environment Canada said in a statement.
