A large earthquake was detected off the coast of Vancouver Island, approximately 250 kilometres west of Tofino, early Wednesday morning.

According to Earthquakes Canada, the 5.1 magnitude earthquake hit at around 4:33 a.m. out in the pacific ocean.

Following the quake, Emergency Info BC tweeted that there would be no threat of a tsunami hitting the province’s coastline.

Danger seems to be at a minimal from this early morning quake as Earthquakes Canada states there have been “no reports of damage and none would be expected.”

The tremor off the coast of Tofino hit hours after a massive earthquake struck the Alaskan peninsula late on Tuesday night.

The Alaskan shaker registered at a magnitude of 7.8, however, it also didn’t trigger any tsunami warnings for British Columbia.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake struck at 11:12 p.m. PDT 105 kilometres south southeast of Perryville, Alaska with a depth of 28 kilometres.

There were many reports of the earthquake being felt in Alaska and there continued to be aftershocks in the same area.

There were tsunami warnings and advisories for parts of coastal Alaska after the earthquake, prompting sirens and evacuations, but as of 1:23 a.m PDT, all tsunami warnings and advisories were cancelled.
