A mechanical issue resulted in a driver on the Trans-Canada Highway veering off-road and landing on Burnside Road West below the highway Thursday afternoon.

Cst. Markus Anastasiades with Saanich Police says as the driver was approaching the bridge over Burnside Road West, when an error with the steering component of the vehicle resulted in the crash.

The vehicle then went down the embankment, flipped, and slid across the road and stopped at the sidewalk.

The crash happened at 2:30 p.m., and Anastasiades noted this is generally a busy time both for vehicles and pedestrians in that area, but only the driver of the vehicle was injured.

The driver is in hospital with serious but not-life-threatening injuries.

Anastasiades says investigators ruled out impairment or other driver errors as possibilities in the crash.

Police, fire and paramedics responded to the crash.

The road has now reopened.
