The driver who crashed through a wall into a Walmart at the Uptown Shopping Centre in Saanich on Friday may have been experiencing a “mental health crisis,” according to police.

The crash happened just before 4:30 p.m. on Friday after the vehicle, which was on a lower parkade level, drove through a concrete wall and into the interior of Wal-Mart — trapping workers in the cooler of the store’s deli section.

“Saanich Fire crews were able to rescue the people trapped inside, and the driver was also safely removed from their vehicle. All sustained non-life-threatening injuries,” police said in a news release Tuesday.

Police are now confirming the driver was a man in his early 20s “who we believe was experiencing a mental health crisis leading up to and at the time of the collision,” they said.

The incident is still being investigated. Police said it’s “remarkable” that no one suffered anything more than non-life threatening injuries due to the severity of the crash.

Originally, the driver was reported to be a woman but police later clarified that it was not.
