Dozens of demonstrators set up a blockade along the Patricia Bay Highway on Friday in support of Mi’kmaq fishers in Nova Scotia.

The demonstration was led by Indigenous community members on Vancouver Island, protesting in solidarity for the Mi’kmaq treaty rights and livelihood.

Supporters gathered at the intersection of Highway 17 and Mount Newton Cross Road at noon today, setting up a blockade and diverting traffic.

Central Saanich Police indicated an awareness of the protest on Thursday and closed the highway between Island View Rd and Amity Dr.

Traffic is being re-routed to avoid the peaceful demonstration, the demonstrators. Authorities are advising drivers to plan extra time for travel and expect delays if travelling along the Pat Bay Highway.

Protestors have since vacated the intersection and police say that the highway has officially reopened as of 1:15 p.m.

Some demonstrators had signs showing support and most were wearing masks amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The demonstration was in response to an ongoing dispute in Nova Scotia fishing communities between Indigenous fishers and non-Indigenous commercial fishers in the region, with some confrontations turning violent.

“Mi’kmaq land defenders are requesting that people lift their pipes and light their medicines, and are calling for groups to gather in support of Mi’kmaq inherent rights. We need all allies on deck as settlers continue to escalate violent tactics to intimidate members of the Mi’kmaq nation,” a call to action on Facebook reads.

Support has been offered from Indigenous groups all across Canada in response to the call to action.

This is a developing story. More information will be added once it is available.
