Dozens of horses need homes as Duncan rescue closes its doors

WatchA Duncan rescue that's saved nearly 400 horses from slaughter is closing its doors and searching for homes for dozens of needy animals. As Skye Ryan reports, the rescue calls it a heartbreaking decision.

Rescuing horses who are bound for meat has become Rebecca Sanesh’s mission in life. But she’s come to a heartbreaking decision.

“Feels like part of my heart’s been taken away,” said Rebecca Sanesh at her barn Tuesday.

Four years after starting Duncan’s Humanity for Horses Rescue & Rehab she says she has completely exhausted her finances, body and spirit.

“I can’t do it all,” said Sanesh.

“I have my daughter who’s special needs at home, I’m working full time. And it’s just taking its toll emotionally.

The Duncan grandmother said the constant stream of horses being bought at auction to be transported by plane for meat in Japan is heartbreaking.

It would have been the fate of many of her rescues if Sanesh and her supporters hadn’t outbid meat buyers who wanted them. Now it has led her to become the subject of repeated online threats and harassment, phone calls and vandalism at her stable, so she says she’s decided she needs to stop before it’s too late.

“Yes I have to,” said Sanesh.

But she said she would have gone through it all again to save the 398 animals the rescue has.

“They all deserve it,” said Sanesh.

Sanesh hopes that volunteers and people wanting to adopt will come forward to help give the 30 horses she needs homes for.
