DFO hands out multiple tickets in Southern Gulf Islands enforcement blitz

Department of Fisheries and Oceans

Not all of those harvesting food from the ocean are playing by the rules, a two-day enforcement blitz by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans has revealed.

On July 9 and 10, officials found a number of violations including the retention of undersized and protected fish, overfishing crab and rockfish, using barbed hooks while salmon fishing and boating through interim sanctuary zones for Southern Resident Killer Whales.

The DFO says it checked 76 vessels, 187 anglers in an area ranging from Powell River to Victoria.

Officers handed out warnings for some violations, while others may results in fines or court appearances.

The DFO says it also assisted with two emergencies including a Mayday call for a vessel taking on water and an air ambulance rescue of an injured person from a beach.
