Nanaimo RCMP says it’s not often they find a person riding a bike without a helmet that leads them directly to a murder investigation.

But that was the case last Friday when the detachment’s Bike Unit officers came across a male riding a mountain bike without a helmet.

Events led police to discover the person to be 19-year-old Kyle Antonio Dias of Etobicoke, Ontario, who Nanaimo RCMP says is wanted for second-degree murder for a shooting in Toronto Feb. 13.

On Feb. 26, Toronto police issued a Canada-wide warrant for Dias, wanted in the death of 27-year-old Tesfa Welsh-Hope, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds and later died in hospital.

Nanaimo RCMP says officers noticed the bike Dias was riding on resembled one reported stolen and after checking its serial number, they confirmed the bike was stolen.

Dias was arrested for possession of stolen property and when asked to identify himself, police say he gave several different names and produced what appeared to be a fake Ontario driver’s license.

Nanaimo RCMP determined Dias’ identity after taking him to their detachment, and Toronto police confirmed details and said they will travel to Vancouver Island to pick up Dias and have him returned home to face the murder charge.

Dias was transported to a remand centre in Victoria and is expected to be flown back to Toronto Wednesday.

Nanaimo RCMP says the bike helmet charge has been dropped and the stolen bike was returned to its owner.
