The Capital Regional District Parks Committee has decided not to increase fees at nine regional parks.

The Capital Regional District (CRD) will not be introducing new parking fees at regional parks, after all.

The CRD was considering paid parking at nine regional parks in order to raise funds to help offset the increasing cost of park maintenance.

On Wednesday, the CRD parks committee decided not to increase fees.

Instead, the committee is recommending that staff examine additional options to raise revenue.

Staff reporting seasonal parking fees would generate up to $1.9 million in annual revenue.

On Monday night, Central Saanich council unanimously voted to reject the CRD’s proposal to begin charging for parking at regional parks, including Island View Beach.

Since the parking lot at Island View Beach is located on municipal land, the Central Saanich council’s rejection effectively killed the proposal.

Currently, the CRD only charges for parking during the summer at Thetis Lake and Sooke Potholes.
