Two cars appeared to be in a ditch following a crash that shut down Highway 19A north of Courtenay May 11, 2022.

BC Highway Patrol, with the assistance of the Comox Valley RCMP, is investigating a two-vehicle crash that was been determined to be fatal and closed down the Old Island Highway just north of Courtenay Wednesday afternoon.

The accident occurred along Highway 19A near Merville, leading to a quick response from BC Emergency Health Services, BC RCMP and the Oyster River Fire Department.

A 29-year-old woman has died as a result of the incident and the BC Coroners Service is currently on the scene as a result.

Another man, 20 years of age, was driving a Kia sedan and was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash.

RCMP believes that the Kia, driving in the southbound direction, crossed over the centre line along Highway 19A as part of the incident, hitting the female driver’s Hyundai.

Both cars ended up in the ditch alongside the road.

The 29-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

RCMP says that both victims were local to the area.

A photo from the scene appeared to show two vehicles, including a black SUV, in a ditch on the side of the highway, with debris strewn on the road.

Hwy 19A was closed for several hours while police examined the scene of the collision and secured the vehicles for further examination.

BC Highway Patrol continues to investigate. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has any related dashcam video should call the BC Highway Patrol at 250-286-5646.

This is a developing story and will be updated with the latest information.
