A school in the Cowichan Valley will be closed until the end of the month.

Cowichan Tribes announced Monday that a functional closure is required for Quw’utsun Smuneem Elementary School due to a staffing shortage.

The school will be closed starting Jan. 25 and in-person learning will resume on Jan. 31.

“With COVID rapidly spreading throughout the community, Cowichan Tribes’ education staff have been closely monitoring staff and student absentee rates at its daycare and schools,” Cowichan Tribes said in a press release.

Cowichan Tribes says the teaching staff are looking for ways to provide support during the closure.

“This may include online learning, learning packages delivered to students’ homes. We are also looking at ways to support student wellness, such as delivering nutritious daily lunches and snacks as well as daily check-ins,” the release notes.

Quw’utsun Smuneem Elementary School is located on Glenora Road near Duncan.
