Cowichan SAR joins search for missing Oak Bay woman

Police and Cowichan search and rescue teams are scouring the area around Genoa Bay and Maple Bay for a missing Oak Bay woman.

Gladys Barman was last seen at the Petro Canada gas station at West Saanich Road at 10 a.m. on July 5. She was driving a forest green 2002 Honda Accord with B.C. licence 940 RGA.

Oak Bay Police said Gladys Barman was last seen driving a Honda Accord similar to the one in the picture.

A concerned neighbour in Gladys’ South Oak Bay neighbourhood that first alerted police to the fact something was wrong. The neighbour noticed newspapers for Gladys’ Times Colonist paper route stacked up at her house that should have been delivered early Thursday morning.

Ray Bernoties, deputy chief of the Oak Bay Police Department, said they received a tip Tuesday night that Barman may have been seen in her vehicle on Stoney Hill Road at around 1:15 p.m. on July 5. According to Bernoties, the person who provided the information believes Barman had limited gas in her car as she asked where the nearest gas station was.

Cowichan resident Dan Sieffert has told CHEK News he was the one to make the report and said Barman appeared disoriented at the time.

Bernoties also said Barman has not used her credit card since 10 a.m. on July 5.

Police have not been able to confirm the woman Sieffert saw was Barman. However, Bernoties said Oak Bay police, RCMP and Cowichan Search and Rescue are all following up on the information. An aircraft is also being used to look for Barman.

The public is still asked to be on the lookout for Barman and her vehicle. Barman is described by police as 175 centimetres (5’9?) in height, weighing 86 kilograms (190 pounds) with blue eyes. Police said she was wearing glasses, a teal windbreaker, jeans and white sneakers. Barman’s family said she has had some cognitive issues and memory loss in the last couple of weeks.

Anyone with information on Barman’s whereabouts is asked to call Oak Bay police at 250-592-2424, their local police department, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. A ‘Finding Gladys Barman’ Facebook page has been set up as a hub for information for family and friends.
