Global death toll from COVID-19 nears one million

Both the World Health Organization and John Hopkins University say there have been nearly one million deaths from COVID-19.

Nearly one million people have died from COVID-19.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a total of 991,224 people have died from the coronavirus as of Sept. 27, while John Hopkins University’s COVID-19 tracker lists the worldwide death toll at 995,450.

Data on the WHO’s website shows that there were 5,380 deaths were reported in the past 24 hours, with India, the United States, Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico registering the most deaths.

India reported 1,124 deaths in the last 24 hours – the highest of any nation – followed by the United States with 884, Brazil with 729, Argentina with 442, and Mexico with 405 deaths.

The death toll will likely exceed one million within the next 24-48 hours, as the world saw an average of 5,210 deaths per day over the past seven days.

There were also 298,773 new COVID-19 reported to the World Health Organization in the past 24 hours, with India, the United States, Brazil, France, and Argentina, reporting the highest number of new cases worldwide in the past 24 hours.

India reported 88,600 new infections followed by the United States, which had 50,700 new infections, its highest daily increase since mid-August.

Meanwhile, Brazil recorded 31,911 new infections while France and Argentina recorded 13,845 and 12,969 new infections respectively.

The total number of cases reported worldwide currently stands at 32,730,945, according to the World Health Organization.
