COVID-19 exposure reported at Nanaimo high school

Students attending a high school in Nanaimo may have been exposed to COVID-19.

Nanaimo Ladysmith School District posted on Facebook Saturday evening that Dover Bay Secondary School has experienced a COVID-19 exposure.

The school district provided no additional details about the exposure, instead referring parents to Island Health’s website.

Island Health says if a school has been notified of an exposure event, no action is required unless contacted by public health or school officials directly.

Dale Burgos, the school district’s director of communication, told CHEK that the were positive exposures at Dover Bay Secondary School on Nov. 2 and Nov. 5.

“Island Health is currently undergoing contact tracing and getting in touch with those that may be affected,” he said in an e-mail to CHEK.

Jennifer Parisi, a spokesperson for Island Health, said one member of the school community tested positive for the virus.

“This person is currently in self-isolation at their home,” Parisi said in an e-mailed statement to CHEK.

Island Health’s medical health officers and their public health team are working with school staff to identify those who may have been exposed, and contact tracing is ongoing, according to Parisi.

“Those identified as close contacts have been instructed to self-isolate,” she said.

Parisi said Island Health wants to reassure parents and students at the school that the exposure is limited to Nov. 2 and Nov. 5 only.

“No ongoing COVID-19 risk to staff and students at the school from this exposure has been identified. We will continue to work with the school and school district to provide students and parents with timely information,” she said.
