Students and staff at Ballenas Secondary School may have been exposed to COVID-19 after an individual who tested positive recently attended the facility.

Students and staff at Parksville high school are being warned of possible exposure to the novel coronavirus.

School District 69 announced Tuesday evening that an individual at Ballenas Secondary School tested positive for COVID-19.

The reported exposure dates are March 31 and April 1.

“Public health staff are completing contact tracing to identify any individuals needing to self-isolate and self-monitor for COVID-19 symptoms,” the district said in media release.

The district says those who have not received a phone call or letter from Island Health informing them that they are high-risk and need to self-isolate, should continue attending Ballenas Secondary while monitoring for possible symptoms.

Ballenas Secondary School is located on Pym Street in Parksville.

The announcement comes just a few hours after B.C. health officials announced more than 1,068 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, including 73 in the Island Health region.
