Island Health says the COVID-19 death announced by B.C. health officials today in Island Health is related to an outbreak at Saanich Peninsula Hospital.

An outbreak of COVID-19 at a Vancouver Island hospital is responsible for the death of one person.

On Monday, Adrian Dix, minister of health, announced that one of the 45 deaths from COVID-19 that were reported in B.C. over the weekend occurred in Island Health.

Additional details were not disclosed by the minister.

However, in a statement to CHEK News, Island Health confirmed that the COVID-related death within Island Health is related to the outbreak at Saanich Peninsula Hospital.

“To the family and friends of this individual, please know that the entire Island Health family grieves with you during this incredibly difficult time. For the Island Health team members who provided compassionate care and support, you are in my thoughts and I am grateful for your efforts,” Island Health president and chief executive officer, Kathy MacNeil, said in an e-mailed statement to CHEK News.

Island Health first declared a COVID-19 outbreak at Saanich Peninsula Hospital on Dec. 1.

A total of seven patients and five staff at the facility have been infected with COVID-19 since then.

When asked whether the person who died was a patient or staff member at the hospital, Island Health declined to disclose further details, citing respect for the privacy of the individual and their family.
