The first public challenge to Richard Atwell as Saanich mayor in the October 20 municipal election has come from Fred Haynes.
The first-term councillor, who was elected in 2014 with more than 13,000 votes, made the announcement official this week.
Haynes said in a release that his candidacy is in response to “increasing requests from the community”.

Atwell, who was elected mayor in 2014, said he would seek a second term earlier this month.
