Colwood Coun. Doug Kobayashi has announced he intends to run for mayor in the upcoming municipal elections.

Kobayashi was first elected in 2018, and says residents raising concerns about the city’s handling of environment, transportation, and housing to healthcare and how the city is being governed spurred him to put his name forward to run for mayor.

“We can’t continue to expect the people of Colwood to shoulder the burden of increased taxes without a conversation about debt reduction or balancing our spending with our revenue streams – especially with inflation at record highs and the cost of living becoming untenable for many families in our community,” Kobayashi said in a news release.

“I keep hearing the same story about families having to dig deep to make changes. They’ve been tightening their belts and streamlining household finances, pivoting their businesses to respond to changing market conditions. We owe it to our residents to demonstrate the same willingness to take a fresh look at how we’re running our municipality.”

Kobayashi served in the Royal Canadian Air Force, and has a master’s in aeronautical engineering.

Colwood’s current mayor, Rob Martin, has not yet declared if he intends to seek re-election.

The provincial municipal elections will be held October 15.
