There’s a big sense of loss in the small Island town of Cobble Hill in the wake of the tragic death of one of its youngest citizens.

“This is a very tragic event for our community,” said a family friend Claire Butler.

“And the loss is going to be felt really deeply by everyone and we will help this family out however we can.”

RCMP are continuing to investigate the death of the toddler. The little boy was hit and killed in a Cobble Hill driveway just before noon on Tuesday.

The boy has been identified by friends and family as Wilder Kevin World.

“Wilder was a fun loving little boy, full of energy, and had an infectious smile. His spirit lives on in his three older brothers and older sister, who loved him deeply,” a GoFundMe for the boy’s family says.

A trust fund has also been set up to help Wilder’s father, Travis, who his partner says will be unable to work for the foreseeable future.

Travis was at the scene at the time of Wilder’s death.

Investigators say despite the desperate resuscitation efforts of first responders, the child died at the scene. The driver is cooperating with police. The community is now rallying to support the boy’s grieving family.

“There’s so many things involved in what happened up there,” said the Cobblestone Pub’s Jake Teufel, who is also a family friend.

“So many people affected we can’t imagine. In their shoes, I’d be a wreck. I wouldn’t be able to work obviously.”

The Cobblestone Pub, that’s about to open after a fire, is cooking meals for the boy’s heartbroken mother and his siblings.

“Just making sure people are fed can be a big help,” said Butler.

“I’ve known the family since I was a kid,” said Teufel.

“So you wanna do something but you can’t really do a lot so.”

So the pub is holding a Canada Day party July 1 and it will also serve as a benefit for the child’s grieving family

“And yeah we’re gonna take funds from that and we’re going to kick it to the GoFundMe account. So we challenge any other local businesses who might be able to do that for them as well,” said Teufel.

The GoFundMe to cover funeral and other expenses can be found here. So far, the GoFundMe has surpassed its $4,000 goal.

Donations to the trust fund for Travis World will be accepted at any Island Savings branch to the account Mill Bay 2712032, with cash and cheques made out to “In trust for Travis World” acceptable.
