Police are investigating the death of a child at a motel in the Cowichan Valley.

Shortly after 9 p.m. on April 9, North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP officers along with BC Emergency Health Services were called to the Falcon Nest Motel in Duncan for a report of an unresponsive six-year-old child.

First responders attempted life-saving efforts and the child was transported to a nearby hospital, where despite resuscitation attempts, they were pronounced dead, according to an RCMP media release.

Valma Sampson, manager of the Falcon Nest Motel, told CHEK News the outcome is horrific.

“It’s heartbreaking. It’s a sad situation. I have a 5-year-old myself,” she said.

The circumstances regarding the child’s death are currently under investigation by the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP. Officers were at the hotel throughout the day on Saturday and are expected to remain in the area tomorrow.

The BC Coroners Service is conducting a separate investigation.

“The North Cowichan Duncan victim services is engaged and are supporting the family during this difficult time,” Sgt. Janelle Shoihet of the BC RCMP, said in a press release.

No further details regarding the child’s age, identity, or circumstances surrounding their death were disclosed by RCMP.

Falcon Nest Motel is located on the Trans-Canada Highway, near the Cowichan Aquatic Centre.
