A Sooke chef is bringing people together virtually through her cooking.
Kait Omdal is a red seal chef turned online streamer.
Omdal started sharing her culinary creations on the website Twitch three years ago, but the videos didn’t really take off until the pandemic began.
“We just saw this huge influx of people wanting to cook at home for themselves,” says Kait.
“We thought hey, what better way than to virtually welcome them into our home and teach them how to cook,” adds Kait.
Now hundreds watch Kait and her husband Sam step by step as they work their way through a variety of dishes each day.
“I got the feeling that people don’t really know how to cook a lot of great food for themselves,” says Kait.
“They’ll whip something up and be like yep this is satisfying, but let’s make something better,” exclaims Kait.
It’s turned into a small but loyal online community, all virtually sharing the couple’s kitchen.
“Having the same people show up every single day talking to them there’s no difference between seeing somebody on the street or seeing somebody in the chat every single time we log on,” says Sam.
“Before the pandemic, we were actually able to travel to some of our viewers and they would take us around their area and we’d go out to eat and stuff like that,” adds Kait.
Together the couple hopes to grow their audience and have big plans for the future.
“Hopefully when the pandemic is over I would love to do one on one cooking classes with people,” says Kait
“Building a food truck and taking the Cook with Kait experience right into the food truck and you’ll be able to see us roll around Victoria cooking your food online and getting to eat it,” adds Sam.
