CHEK Upside: Island athlete competing in virtual CrossFit Games

WatchAdam Davidson has spent the last eight years chasing his dream of competing in the CrossFit Games, and amidst a global pandemic, that dream will become reality.

A Victoria CrossFit athlete is heading to the CrossFit Games, sort of. Adam Davidson has been on a journey to compete in the games for the past eight years, and at an event in Brazil this year, he punched his ticket.

“When I clinched that spot it was the closing of a chapter you know,” says Davidson. “Eight years trying to work towards this and finally making it, it was one of those things where you complete a goal that’s very hard to complete and it’s finally coming to a close at the end of this weekend,” adds Davidson.

But there was a twist.

“I get to qualify for the Cross Fit Games and I came home to a pandemic,” says Davidson.

The games were supposed to happen from July 29 to Aug. 2 in Madison Wisconsin. Instead, they will take place online this Friday.

“We submit the videos and then we have a judge that they fly out to come and judge us and then they submit the scores for us,” says Davidson. “We don’t get to see anybody besides us while we’re competing so we’re really in the dark and its kind of interesting,” Davidson adds.

“It’s a little bittersweet to have it in an online platform you know he doesn’t get those fans, he doesn’t get that stadium experience,” says Davidson’s wife, Kelsey Goodwin. “It’s actually also really cool that he gets to fulfill his dream to go to the games within the four walls of his dream of opening this space here in Victoria,” adds Goodwin.

The delay means Davidson has been forced to prolong his rigorous training schedule for two months longer than anticipated.

“You peak for three months, three-and–half months sometimes, but we’ve been trying to peak for about five months,” says Davidson. “So we’ve had to like change our programming around and then they pushed that deadline and then they pushed it again,” he adds.

But come Friday it will all be worth it.

“It’s been a lot to juggle these past couple years for sure,” exclaims Goodwin.

“It hasn’t come without its hurdles but it’s been so rewarding and we’re just super excited to see this all come to fruition,” she adds.

“My goal is like to get this done and just like go to the lake and eat scones and donuts all day long,” laughs Adam.
