After a successful debut in 2020, the Cowichan Exhibition’s Movies in the Park is back for a second season.

The project was kickstarted last year after the cancelation of the 152nd edition of the exhibition.

With acres of property sitting dormant, executive director Shari Paterson set out to create a safe community event.

“The Cowichan Exhibition has been part of the fabric of this community for so many years, 153, that we really wanted to do something for the community and we came across a drive-in and just had to find some way to build it,” says Paterson.

That’s when the Cowichan community stepped in to help. The exhibition partnered with the Caprice Theatre in Duncan to provide the movies and also found someone with the proper projection equipment.

“We just had to build the theatre screen and put it together, it was a lot of fun,” smiles Paterson.

Movies in the Park ran for eight nights in 2020, but this year the exhibition is expanding its offering.

“We’re hoping to run it more often than we did last year because now we kind of have a little bit of an idea of what it looks like to put this together,” says Paterson.

“It was really heartwarming to see how excited families were to be able to get out and do something together,” adds Paterson.

The experience has been equally as enjoyable for the exhibition staff.

“You know a good old drive-in and a little having some popcorn and watching a movie, it’s just something to look forward to,” says Paterson.

The Croods: A New Age will be the first movie this year. For tickets and more information head to the Cowichan Exhibition website and click on Movies in the Park.
