A passenger ferry from Sidney to the Gulf Islands could leave from the Port Sidney Marina.

The Capital Regional District is considering developing a passenger-only ferry service between Sidney and the Gulf Islands.

The ferry service would run between Sidney and the Southern Gulf Islands if a pilot project proves feasible.

The Capital Regional District (CRD) has now issued a request for proposals for a single-route service. The service would link Galiano Island, Mayne Island, Saturna Island, Pender Island and Salt Spring Island with Sidney. Howeever, previous attempts by private companies to provide connections to the islands have not been sustainable due to high operating, staffing and capital costs.

Sidney Mayor and CRD Chair Steve Price said a new ferry would provide significant economic benefits for the town.
