Campbell River School District announced Wednesday night schools will be closed Thursday.

The Campbell River School District didn’t wait until Thursday morning for a decision on whether classes will be cancelled.

The school district announced late Wednesday night all schools and programs in District 72 will be closed Jan. 16.

Officials say they have been monitoring the weather conditions all Wednesday afternoon and evening, with heavy snowfall in the region.

A winter storm warning remains in effect from Campbell River to Courtenay, with strong winds and snowfall heavy at times.

SD 72 says evening events and facility rentals Thursday are also cancelled.

“Groups that had reserved the use of an SD72 facility should contact the school board office receptionist to reschedule or receive a refund,” a district statement said.

Most schools and districts on Vancouver Island say they will make a decision on school closures early Thursday morning.

Sooke School District, which had a snow day Wednesday, said it anticipates opening Thursday.
