Campbell River RCMP charge man with assault and robbery after domestic violence incident

A man is charged with assault and robbery following a domestic violence incident in Campbell River.

The RCMP apprehended a 29-year-old suspect on June 13 and are no longer searching for the black BMW vehicle involved in the incident.

The Campbell River RCMP is not releasing the suspect’s name in order to maintain the victim’s privacy.

Campbell River RCMP officers responded to 57 reports of domestic violence incidents in the month of May this year, a slight increase of two incidents compared to May of 2019.

Having a minor increase in our domestic Violence numbers is a bit of good news,  said Cst Maury Tyre. Our April numbers were up significantly, so it is important to note that we aren’t seeing a continuing trend.

This nearly 4 per cent spike in reports is significantly less than the jump seen in April of this year. The Campbell River RCMP saw an 84 per cent increase in domestic violence reports in April, with 42 calls compared to the previous year’s 23.

That being said, any increase at all in domestic violence cases is not positive,” said Cst. Tyre. “The more awareness that we can bring to domestic violence in our community is really our goal. Our hope is that with more awareness people will reach out for help before a situation becomes dangerous.

Numerous departments across the Island, including the Nanaimo RCMP, have said calls with reports of domestic violence have increased significantly since the start of the pandemic.
