Mike Germunstad had just hopped off his ATV with his dog Shorty to do some cleaning up when he came face-to-face with two big cats.

It happened at a cabin around Middle Quinsam Lake and Germunstad captured the encounter on video.

In the video, he can be heard urgently trying to call his dog back as one of the juvenile cougars starts to approach.

He says he just managed to pull his dog away by the scruff of the neck.

The cougar even hit him in the leg before retreating back a few meters to where its companion was lying and watching.

“The camera’s shaking, that was a close,” Germunstad can be heard saying.

The stand-off then lasts for a several minutes  before the two cougars wander back into the bushes together.

Germunstad says all along he was only hoping their mom wasn’t nearby.

He then got back onto his ATV with Shorty and heads out as well.

“Holy that was close,” he says.

“Let’s get the heck out of here.”

He says he’s called the BC Conservation Officer Service to let them know about the incident and because other people use the cabin.
