The Allegra Singers @ Oak Bay United Church

The Allegra Singers perform a wonderful blend of popular songs – from jazz to pop, from spiritual to humorous, from vintage to modern. If you’ve never seen the Allegra Singers before .. well, get ready for some great music and entertainment!

Retro Favorites From the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s
We’re going to have a musical love-in with songs from that nostalgic time including Somebody to Love by Freddie Mercury as recorded by Queen, Love Will Keep Us Together by Neil Sadaka (remember The Captain and Tenille singing it?), Across the Universe by The Beatles (perhaps the most prolific songwriters of all time), and Green Green (It’s green they say, on the far side of the hill ..) by the Christy Minstrels. And hey, just for fun .. Mambo Italiano (recorded by Rosemary Clooney in 1954).

Trials, Tribulations and Triumphs
You’ll also enjoy these inspirational songs from way back .. All My Trials (recorded by Joan Baez as well as Peter, Paul and Mary), Stormy Weather (recorded by Lena Horne), Dry Bones (your anatomy lesson recorded by The Delta Rhythm Boys), and How Can I Keep From Singing? (written by a Baptist minister in 1868 and adopted by the Quakers). And you’ll hear the profound message in Let Peace and Love Shine Through (a song written, not so way back, in 2016 by high school students in Doylestown, Pennsylvania).

Modern Music on Retro Themes
You’ll appreciate the lively You’ll Be Back from Hamilton (a Grammy Award winning Broadway Musical about early American history), Twenty-Three Camels (the legendary story of the camels that were used during the Cariboo Gold Rush of 1862), and Fix You (recorded by Coldplay in 2005 – Ok, maybe this one doesn’t have a retro theme, but we really like the song, so we’re going to sing it!).
