Van Django @ Upstairs Lounge, Oak Bay Recreation Centre

Van Django’s music is well-rooted in the gypsy jazz of 1930’s Paris France, but beyond that it’s all pure blue-skying; flights of dazzling fancy, driving rhythms and boundless creativity featuring original compositions and arrangements including humorous mash-ups that showcase their eclectic influences in full regalia.

Van Django is made up of four of Canada’s most talented and eclectic musicians; violinist Cameron Wilson, guitarist Budge Schachte, guitarist/cellist Finn Manniche and bassist Brent Gubbels.

Since the group’s formation in 1998, they have toured extensively in Canada as well as international forays to the USA, Europe and China, they’ve had repeat performances at Djangofest Northwest Festival on Whidbey Island. DFNW is North America’s premier gypsy jazz festival.

They have released 3 CD’s “Tiptoe Trip”, “Waltz in the Shape of a Tree” and a Christmas CD with special guests titled, “Cool Yule”. Their CD’s have been well received and played on many radio stations at home and abroad including; CBC, RDI, Espace Musique, NPR and Lyric FM in Ireland.

WiL @ Upstairs Lounge, Oak Bay Recreation Centre

William Mimnaugh (aka WiL) is a Canadian singer songwriter who performs music within the Americana (roots rock) tradition. He is best known for penning songs like ‘Roam’, flagship anthem to Travel Alberta’s stunning ad campaign called ‘Remember to Breathe’. He is known for his delicate beautiful songs, but live, he destroys the stage with the attitude and vigour”… possessing a very particular performance style; one that comes with experience; on and off the road. WiL delivers his eclectic brand of contemporary roots inspired rock with band mates Keith Gallant (drums) and Lena Birtwistle (keys/vocals).

His music style is unique, blending elements of traditional country, roots-rock, soul and blues like many ‘Americana’ artists yet he defies the expansive genre, ever so slightly, by adding elements of straight up pop music resulting in a distinctive and refreshing sound. He first hit the scene in 2003 with his debut release ‘Both Hands’. Nominated for three Western Canadian Music Awards including Best Live Act, the album launched his career path as a touring singer/songwriter.

Carlos del Junco & The Blues Mongrels @ Upstairs Lounge, Oak Bay Recreation Centre

Born in Havana, Cuba, Del Junco (loosely translated “of the reeds”) immigrated with his family at the age of one. He bent his first note on a harmonica when he was fourteen, making his debut with his high school math teacher at a student talent night. In his early 20’s Del Junco was immersed in a visual arts career; which has definitely had an influence on his outlook on music: “Music is just a different way of creating textures and shapes.”

Playing a ten hole diatonic harmonica, Carlos has developed the unique ability to play chromatically by using a recently developed “overblow” technique taught to him by jazz virtuoso Howard Levy. Overall, this approach to the diatonic harmonica, although much more difficult to achieve, is in many ways more expressive and communicative than the mechanized tone produced by the chromatic harmonica . Carlos is one of the few pioneers of this overblow method, bringing musical credibility to what has still been considered by many in the music industry – a fringe folk instrument. The sophisticated sound produced by Del Junco is at once sensitive, soulful, and sexy while never forgetting the rawness inherent in blues music. Simultaneously sophisticated and raw, his playing blurs the boundaries between blues and jazz (hence the name for his band “The Blues Mongrels”). The emphasis is on blues, but Carlos and his band are not afraid to merrily traipse off in other directions delivering a seamless fusion of New Orleans second line grooves, swing, Latin, hip-hop or ska melodies, to swampy roots rock.

Carlos has won two gold medals at the Hohner World Harmonica Championships & was judged world’s best in both the diatonic blues & diatonic jazz categories. Carlos is a sought after performer who tours nationally and internationally playing major jazz, blues and folk festivals.

Washington & Cook | Funkified Urban Jazz @ Upstairs Lounge, Oak Bay Recreation Centre

Maureen Washington and Daniel Cook, a musical collaboration best described as ‘Funkified Urban Jazz’, play a unique blend of blues, funk, jazz, Latin & roots music. Classic standards mixed with well-crafted original songs are performed with Ryan Tandy, Damian Graham and special guest Jerry Cook.

With now nine albums to her credit, Maureen Washington began her musical career in her home town of Prince George. Maureenslips easily from sassy to sexy within a single line of lyrics, at times echoing the haunting tones of Etta James and Carmen McRae, then faster than the mind and ear can make the transition, Maureen Washington exudes the impish irreverence of Jann Arden and the vocal agility of Holly Cole. And yet, with all splendor attached to such comparisons, Maureen’s musical style remains distinctly her own. Among her many nominations and awards is the 2014 Black Canadian Award for Best Jazz and Soul Artist.

Daniel Cook is a singer songwriter who fuses contagious melodies with timeless stories creating a fresh brand of Original West Coast Roots Music, and a guitarist who blends melody and minimalism into a sweet mix of jazz and country guitar traditions.

“Mashes together James Brown, the Family Stone, Otis Redding and the Memphis Horns in one slick, rock ‘n’ roll package, and tops it off with the spirit of gospel” – OTTAWA CITIZEN

Blending 60s soul fire with impassioned vocals and songwriting, St. Paul & the Broken Bones are killing it on the international music scene. Their take-no-prisoners live show has earned them legions of fans across Europe and North America. This Alabama-based 8-piece soul band is led by PAUL JANEWAY, a former bank teller whose vocals draw frequent comparisons to soul legends like Otis Redding and Al Green. During the band’s feverish performances, Janeway screams, croons and often dives into the audience. Following the success of their debut album “Half the City,” St. Paul & The Broken Bones’ critically acclaimed sophomore album “Sea of Noise” was released in 2016. This high voltage band makes its debut at TD JazzFest 2018.
