A member of the Order of Canada, Ranee is also an author and an award-winning actress who gave a memorable musical performance as Billie Holiday. She has recorded 13 CDs for the Justin Time label, and the sidemen on her remarkable set of recordings have included such notable jazz artists as Clark Terry, Red Mitchell, and Oliver Jones. She also won a JUNO for “Best Vocal Jazz Album” in 2010. Ranee’s latest touring show, Dark Divas, is a celebration of the most profound jazz and blues singers of the last century. From Josephine Baker and Pearl Bailey to Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan, Ranee explores this vital legacy as a gifted interpreter and never just an imitator. Expect brilliance! The SPANISH HARLEM ORCHESTRA (SHO) is a two-time Grammy winning 13-piece salsa and Latin jazz band setting the standard for New York style, authentic hard core salsa—live or recorded, it doesn’t get any better. Lead by pianist OSCAR HERNANDEZ, the band’s stage presence, rich sound and musical precision leaves audiences mesmerized until the last note. With four Grammy nominations over a 15 year career, this Latin Jazz powerhouse recently released their self-titled fifth album, which features two of America’s great jazz icons, Chick Corea and Joe Lovano. With 13 world-class artists coming together to create an unparalleled musical experience, SHO are sure to make their mark on this year’s TD JazzFest.
Often hailed as the obvious successor to Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, alto and soprano sax master Vincent Herring is celebrated for putting a savvy contemporary spin on classic hard-bop. Playing with an exciting mix of fire and finesse, Herring and his veteran quartet perform contemporary jazz that is intense, soulful, and swings like crazy. The early 1980s saw Herring cutting his teeth with the Lionel Hampton Big Band; later, he played with Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Cedar Walton, Carla Bley, Jack DeJohnette, Dizzy Gillespie and Roy Hargrove – to name just a few. He has recorded over 20 albums as a leader, been on 250 recordings as a sideman, and appeared at nearly every major jazz festival in the world. Long regarded as a sax virtuoso with a uniquely intense and vigorous voice, Herring continues to tour the globe to great acclaim. Dave Kikoski piano, Yasushi Nakamura bass, Carl Allen drums
Three time Grammy nominee Julian Lage is a certified guitar prodigy who has a distinctly American musical personality that he expresses via a unique blend of jazz, blues, classical, and country. The virtuoso, who played with Gary Burton at age 15, has matured into a thoughtful performer and composer who combines fleet precision and immense technical skill with a boundless musical imagination. His current trio has just released its second CD Modern Lore with Mack Avenue, which was praised by Downbeat for its “virtuosic swirl of twangy textures and gritty grooves.” His 2017 recording, Mount Royal, was nominated for a Grammy this year. Not unlike the equally eclectic Bill Frisell, Lage and his trio take an Americana-tinged ramble through some gorgeous tunes that evoke Duane Eddy and Chet Atkins alongside some righteous swing, languidly cool jazz, and spirited improvisation. Jorge Roeder bass, Eric Doob drums
