Blue Bridge Theatre kicks off 10th anniversary with classic farce

Keeping a professional theatre going on the strength of donations and ticket sales alone, can be a huge challenge.

But Blue Bridge Repertory Theatre has been doing just that for the past decade.

They are kicking off their 10th season with an evening of four one-act comedies by the Russian playwright Anton Chekhov.

Brian Richmond, artistic director for Blue Bridge Theatre says that “these are four plays by the late Anton Chekhov, my favourite playwright of all time, and these are four plays that don’t get performed very often.”

“They are just hysterical little one-act farces that we’ve joined into an evening that we’re calling ‘Swan Song (and Other Farces)’.'”

Richmond points out that the subject matter of each of the four one-act plays is timeless.

“It’s really hard to find plays from the past, especially comedies from the past, that still have an impact with our audiences today, and I think… these four?  They have a rather timeless quality to them.

“They’re more about human qualities, about how vain we all are, and how silly we are when we are so vain and proud.”

Actor Celine Stubel agrees.  “It’s amazing how it actually comes off the page in such a modern way!

“There’s a lot of comedy, and also a lot of, I think, surprisingly touching moments.”

Richmond is proud that Blue Bridge Theatre is celebrating 10 years.

“It’s really just a labour of love.

“We have had many, many successes, and we’ve had many many challenges, and we’re just happy to be at this point and still be around.

“This is the opening show or our 10th anniversary season, and we just want people to come and help us celebrate that, and have a few laughs while they’re doing it.”
