WATCH: A fire has destroyed a home on a gulf island near Nanaimo. There is no fire department on Mudge Island so when one breaks out during the height of a dry hot summer, everyone on the island is concerned and rushes in to help. Kendall Hanson reports.
A fully-engulfed fire broke out at a home Mudge Island on Wednesday morning.
With bone-dry conditions, the fire quickly spread to nearby grass and bushes.

The island, located between Nanaimo and Gabriola Island, has its own community fire brigade but relies on nearby authorities in larger fires.

Residents contacted Coastal Fire at around 9 a.m. and two helicopters responded, dousing the fire from the air, and an initial attack crew on the ground assisted the local fire brigade. Smoke could be seen from Nanaimo.

According to the Coastal Fire Centre, the fire was 100 by 50 feet (30 metres by 15 metres) and while residents say the fire is out, authorities say it is being held.
The BC Wildfire Service has listed the fire as human-caused.
