One man is in police custody after a fire and assault at Beacon Hill Park.

Emergency crews were called to the popular park at around 3 p.m. Saturday for reports of a tent fire and assault.

Const. Cam MacIntyre, media spokesperson with VicPD, told CHEK News one man has been arrested and remains in police custody while a woman was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries. He also said the fire and the assault are related, but an investigation is underway to determine the sequence of events.

“The details of the event, such as if the assault preceded the fire, or vice versa, are still under investigation,” MacIntyre said.

Saturday’s fire at Beacon Hill Park comes days after another tent caught fire and burst into flames.

MacIntyre said the department is concerned about the fires and will be keeping an eye on the area.

“It continues to be a priority area of focus for us and our officers are paying attention to that area,” he said.
