BC Transit employees tie the knot on bus in Victoria

Getting married on a bus: It wasn’t what BC Transit employees Darcy Darbyshire and Eli Blanchette had imagined for their wedding.

“We were supposed to get married in Cuba, but of course COVID changed that plan,” said Darbyshire, who has been a member of the BC Transit service team since November 2019.

Darbyshire and Blanchette, a BC Transit bus driver, had planned the tropical beach wedding of their dreams on the fifth anniversary of their first date, Feb. 15, 2021.

But when it became clear that wouldn’t happen, the couple had to switch gears. That’s when Blanchette had the perfect idea: A bus wedding. Only it started out as a joke.

“Then her mom kind of fell in love with the idea, and it took off from there,” said Blanchette, who has been with the company since September 2018. “I’ve always had an interest in buses, and transit is more than just a job for me so it’s kind of perfect.”

To keep the theme going, Blanchette said he even suggested wearing his BC Transit uniform with a tie to the wedding, but Darbyshire wasn’t as enthusiastic about that idea. Instead he opted for a traditional suit and Darbyshire wore a white dress.

This is the first time a ceremony has taken place on a bus at the Victoria Transit Centre, according to BC Transit.

“When the request came through from two of our employees, we knew that we had to do whatever we could to help with their special day,” said Brian Harrington, the company’s assistant general manager of operator leadership.

“I’ve been a part of a lot of weddings from working in the hotel industry for many years, but a wedding on a bus is a first for me,” he added.

Darbyshire said they’re still planning to visit Cuba with all their friends and family whenever they’re able to, since the couple was only allowed 10 people for their ceremony during the pandemic.
