If you’ve always wanted to adopt an adult cat, now is the time.

The BC SPCA announced earlier this week that they are offering 50 per cent off adoption fees for adult cats until June 30 in an effort to free space at their various shelters. The discount is available at all BC SPCA branches.

Lorie Chortyk, general manager of communications for the BC SPCA, said shelters throughout the province have seen a massive influx of cats this year and need to free up space in order to be able to handle future feline intakes.

“Our shelters are overwhelmed with cats as we’ve been responding to many cases this year where up to 100 cats are being rescued at one time from hoarding situations,” Chortyk said in a press release. “Just this month we took in 120 cats from a property in northern B.C. and these kinds of cases are happening all around the province.”

A brief look at the BC SPCA’s website shows a number of Island branches do have older cats available, including Victoria with six, Alberni-Clayoquot and Campbell River with three each. Elsewhere, the Nanaimo shelter has a 16-year-old female named Nacho that is available for adoption.

Chortyk said the BC SPCA is seeing more and more cats are coming to them from properties with hoarding situations. She also stressed that this is a busy time of year and the older cats need to find loving homes.

“We are definitely getting more and more requests for help on properties where hoarding situations have gotten out of control, or people are just overwhelmed with the number of animals they are caring for,” said Chortyk. “COVID, the rising cost of living and mental health challenges are all playing a role in this increased need for help. We encourage anyone who has been thinking about adopting a pet to take advantage of this promotion.”
