BC NDP platform promises benefit of up to $1,000 to families

WatchIt's a promise worth $1.4 billion. That's part of the NDP's election platform today. It includes a big financial bump for many British Columbians. But Mary Griffin reports, the news is going over like a wet blanket from the other political parties.

On Tuesday, the BC NDP unveiled its election platform announced by party leader John Horgan.

“We have three basic priorities, better healthcare for you and your family, affordability and security in your home, and in your community. And good jobs and livelihoods in a clean energy future,” Horgan said.

The party’s platform includes 154 commitments, many are previously announced. But the biggest is worth $1.4 billion.

“This is for people with a family income of $125,000 or individuals with an income of about $62,500 a year thousand dollars,” Horgan said.

If elected, the NDP says it would directly deposit $1,000 to households with incomes under $125,000, $500 for single individuals with incomes under $62,000. In addition, they will provide free transit passes for children 12 and under. Other promises include a rent freeze until 2022 and an annual $400 renter’s rebate.

But BC Liberal candidate for the Richmond-Queenborough riding, Jas Johal, didn’t mince words when describing the NDP’s proposal to BC voters.

“He’s used the dollars, the public’s dollars, to bribe them during an unnecessary pandemic election,” Johal said.

And the BC Green Party leader claimed many of the ideas from the NDP are Green proposals.

“So many of what the NDP platform promises that today were released, actually exactly mirror what’s in the letter and in the proposals that we put to John Horgan three days before he called this unnecessary election,” Sonia Furstenau said.

Voters will make their decision on Oct. 24 at the polls.
