BC Ferries’ two brand new hybrid-powered vessels now have been officially named.
The newly named Island Discovery and Island Aurora will enter service later this year.
The ships will be used on the Powell River – Texada Island and the Port McNeill – Alert Bay – Sointula routes.
Both are designed to carry up to 47 vehicles and 450 passengers.
The ships will be the first BC Ferries to use hybrid diesel-electric power, with the ability to convert to full-electric power once the necessary shore infrastructure is in place.
The company says in a release the names were selected with community input and to celebrate the beauty of the journey and its connection to coastal communities the ferries will serve.
